Stat calculation off when activity includes pauses

Postby pokrface on Tue Mar 09, 2010 1:16 am

I use Ascent to track my running, with data imported from a Garmin Forerunner 405 GPS watch. I've noticed that Ascent appears to base its summary calculations on the total length of time between activity start and activity stop, rather than the actual amount of time recorded by the watch. I have my 405 set to pause the timer when I have to stop, like when I have to wait to cross the road for traffic, and it occasionally makes an annoying difference in my times.

For example, here's my run from Saturday, first the summary and then the splits:

And here's my run from today, on the same track, again first with the summary and then with splits:

Even though the actual time spent running on Saturday was 31:38 and today was 30:51, Ascent displays near-identical total durations, average speeds, and average paces--probably because I had to wait for a fair amount of time at a crosswalk today. Is there a setting I can tweak to have Ascent base summary calculation strictly on GPS data, or is this total-time reporting simply an artifact of how Ascent calculates its summary data?

I've seen this happen a few times in my files if I don't also set a minimum pause speed in Ascent's preferences as well as on my Garmin device. Check your Ascent preferences to be sure there's a minimum speed other than 0 set for active time calculations.

I do have that option set, yes--my minimum speed for moving time calculations in Ascent is set to 1.0 mph

Ignoring the splits for the moment, do you have the browser summary set to display duration or active time, average speed or average moving speed, average pace or average moving pace, etc?

I use a garmin 705 for cycling but also carry it for running. In my case duration shows the total time including pauses while active time shows the time I was running, excluding pauses, etc. Same for avg speed vs moving speed/pace. The splits on my run add up to the moving time, not my total duration including pauses.

If you have the browser display set properly and are still not seeing pauses/stops accounted for, there may be a problem with how ascent is interpreting garmin 405 data. Rob will have to speak to that. You might also try moving the minimum speed for moving time calculations in preferences up to 2 miles per hour (that's where mine is set) to assure that noise in the gps system is filtered out.

Ah HA. Good call. That's what I get for not paying attention. I have disabled duration, average speed, and average pace and enabled active duration, average moving speed, and average moving pace. I believe that will give me the data I'm looking for. Thanks for helping!!
